Super El Niño and 15,800 Deaths: India Began Forecasting ENSO Because of Famine. Now It Must Forecast Heat
The Climate Impact Lab, co-founded by University of Chicago economist Michael Greenstone, has released country-level projections of excess heat deaths from the 2026 Super El Niño. For India the estimate is 15,800 additional deaths over six months. The report comes as the monsoon withdraws with a 15% national deficit and thermal plants report low coal stocks.
