The value here isn't overturning a historical narrative; it's testing whether the biological record confirms, complicates or quietly corrects what texts and material culture already suggest about who actually populated the middle Ganga Valley's cities.

Why the Method Itself Is the News

For most of its existence, Indian archaeology has answered "who lived here" through inference - pottery style, coin hoards, architectural layers. That inference is powerful but indirect: it tells you what people made, not who they were.

Ancient DNA collapses that gap. A radiocarbon date fixes when; mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA fix lineage; isotope ratios in bone collagen fix diet. Together they let archaeology stop inferring identity from objects and start reading it directly off the body.
