This forces something rare in India's border security apparatus: the BSF cannot move unilaterally here. It needs sustained technical coordination with the West Bengal Department of Irrigation and Waterways for feasibility and with environmental authorities for clearance, meaning the timeline for this fence is set as much by ecological review as by engineering capacity.
There is a genuine trade-off underneath the security framing and it deserves to be named plainly rather than smoothed over: every additional kilometre of fencing reduces the porousness that trans-border criminal activity exploits, but every additional kilometre also risks fragmenting a mangrove and tiger habitat that doesn't recognise the India-Bangladesh line at all.
The project's own outreach to local hoteliers and residents, promising compensation and rehabilitation, is really an acknowledgment that this isn't a purely technical undertaking - it's an attempt to secure a border without unravelling an ecosystem in the process.
For an aspirant, the real lesson isn't "India is fencing a border." It's that border infrastructure in ecologically protected zones is structurally different from border infrastructure anywhere else - it requires the Ministry of Home Affairs to operate inside environmental law's constraints rather than around them and that intersection, not the fence itself, is what makes this project genuinely unusual.
