The 2011 Census recorded over 1,300 mother tongues nationally - a number that only makes sense once you accept that isolation, not integration, is usually what keeps a language distinct. The unsettling implication for GS1 aspirants is this: every linguistic-integration policy, every push toward a shared national linguistic infrastructure, is - by this study's own logic - also a homogenising force.
