If a future conflict disrupts the supply of Arizona-made guidance units, India's assembly line has nothing to assemble. That is the specific, concrete meaning of "dependency" in a defence co-production deal - not a vague loss of sovereignty, but a precise single point of failure in the supply chain for the missile's most critical subsystem.

Where India Actually Stands This is

why the deal has to be read alongside DRDO's parallel Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile programme, which is India's attempt to build the whole system - guidance included - indigenously. The Javelin deal solves an urgent capability gap immediately, after 15 years of failed negotiation and gives Indian industry combat-proven hardware used effectively in Ukraine.

But it doesn't substitute for what DRDO's MPATGM is trying to do, which is close the actual technology gap rather than the immediate inventory gap. India isn't choosing between the two - it's running an urgent stopgap and a longer indigenous programme side by side and the Javelin deal only reduces strategic dependency if that parallel indigenous effort eventually succeeds.

For the exam, the useful framework isn't "foreign versus indigenous defence procurement" as a binary. It's learning to read any co-production or offset deal by asking exactly which sub-systems get transferred and which stay locked in the supplier's own facilities - because that answer, not the announcement itself, tells you how much strategic autonomy the deal actually buys.
