The state has now moved to a version of the same instinct - engineer the outcome rather than let nature take its course - just with living animals instead of a cloned one.
Enclosures, radio collars, a "dedicated team of doctors" monitoring diet: this is species recovery run more like an intensive-care unit than a forest. None of this is wrong on its own. With twelve to sixteen animals left, waiting for nature to sort itself out is not a neutral choice - it is a choice to let the central Indian population disappear.
The ethical weight sits elsewhere: at what point does the manner of saving a species start changing what is actually being saved.
What Each Path Costs
A wild buffalo raised partly in an enclosure, monitored constantly, moved between states by human decision - is it still the same animal the Wildlife Protection Act's Schedule I was written to protect or is it becoming something closer to a managed herd that happens to look wild?
That question has a real cost attached, not an abstract one. Officials themselves admit the fallback, if translocation fails, is artificial insemination - pushing the intervention one level deeper into the animal's biology.
The opposite choice - minimal intervention, no enclosures, no imported animals - has its own cost and it is not abstract either: extinction, of a locally adapted population that took centuries to exist. Retaliatory killings, poaching and interbreeding with domestic cattle are already erasing this species faster than any bureaucratic plan can restore it.
Where This Leaves the Officer on the Ground
The honest position is not to pretend enclosures are conservation as usual and not to reject intervention because it feels artificial. It is to accept that at this population size, engineered survival is the only realistic path to a wild future - and to build in an explicit, monitored exit: a defined point at which enclosures come down and management stops, so the intervention has a horizon rather than becoming the permanent condition of the species.
Saving the buffalo and preserving its wildness are not automatically the same project. Chhattisgarh's plan only earns the name "conservation" if it treats that difference seriously, rather than assuming survival alone settles the question.
